Earlier this month I spent a week in The Three Valleys in the Alps, which is not only home to some of the best ski runs in Europe, but is also, in my opinion, the best place for some good old fashioned people (/outfit) watching. On the slopes there were a lot of sand-coloured Goldbergh jackets, red one-pieces and in-boot ski leggings, but the après-ski outfits were just as stylish. Evening attire in the mountains always errs on the side of casual – this isn’t an occasion for a dress or heels.
If you’re unsure about what to pack for evenings in a ski resort, it’s best to prioritise warmth and comfort. Let’s face it: it’s going to be very cold. The overall Alpine aesthetic tends to have a charming, retro appeal – think checked tablecloths, wooden panelling and old skis as decor. So why not play up to this theme with your outfits too? Fair Isle and Nordic prints are a classic choice for tired skiers, and brands like Perfect Moment and We Norwegians have all been playing with the idea of heritage knitwear.
Just like with your skiwear, it is important to pay close attention to the quality of the fabrics and the warmth they can provide. Merino wool or cashmere is always a good idea. If you keep the foundations of your outfit simple – think leggings, jogging bottoms or jeans – you can then add some personality with some playful accessories. A statement balaclava, on-theme headband or bold sunglasses will give any look a fashion edge. If you want to go all-out glamour, nothing looks as luxurious as an outfit that matches the snow, with layers of fluffy, powdery knitwear.
