Newcastle United’s summer transfer plans will be not be impacted by the club missing out on European football for next season despite some fears that potential targets could turn the Magpies down.
United were all set for a European adventure in the 2024-25 campaign but were pipped by Chelsea and Man United meaning the club missed out on a run in either the Europa League and Europa Conference League sparking concern amongst some fans that changes may need to be made to the summer’s transfer approach.
But The Mirror’s Simon Bird, speaking on The Everything is Black and White Podcast does not believe that will be the case – telling host Andrew Musgrove that players approach by Newcastle should still see a move to Tyneside as a ‘massive step up.’

He said: “I don’t think like being in the Europa League or the Conference League would change a players’ mind about joining Newcastle. If you’re in the Champions League, I think that opens up different players at a different level of player like they got Sandro Tonali last year and that because they were in the Champions League.
“But I don’t think it makes any difference really in terms of who they’re going to sign because I think at the minute without selling anyone, without cashing in on a star, I’m not sure if the budget is enormous.
“They seem to have the ceiling of about £50-60 million as the headline figure for for a player. Eddie Howe said a month or so ago before the end of the season that they can’t sign ready made elite players so that they are signing people like Lloyd Kelly, Tosin and others to make them better, add value and double the price like Anthony Gordon who they signed for £35m-£40m and now he’s probably worth £60 million so that’s their approach.
“Those players aren’t going to turn Newcastle down just because they they’re not in Europe. I think they would look at the chance to join Newcastle as a as a massive step up.”
