Gareth Southgate must break bad news to seven members of England’s squad before submitting a final group of 26 players to UEFA at the end of this week following a pair of friendlies
England’s Euro 2024 preparations ramp up on Monday with a friendly against Bosnia Herzegovina at St James’ Park.
And several players on the fringes of Gareth Southgate ’s plans will look to stake their claim for a place in the 26-man squad that heads to Germany.
The England manager last month named a 33-man group that must be trimmed by seven. The Three Lions will also face Iceland at Wembley on Friday night before heading to their tournament camp in Erfurt. By that point Southgate will have made some difficult decisions and informed those who have just missed out.
When must England submit their final squad?
All 24 teams heading to Euro 2024 have a deadline of Friday June 7 to submit their final 26-men squads. It is unclear if Southgate will wait until the last minute, though it will be curious to see if players facing the disappointment of missing out still take on Iceland.

Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson, Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale, James Trafford.
Defenders: Jarrad Branthwaite, Lewis Dunk, Joe Gomez, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Harry Maguire, Jarell Quansah, Luke Shaw, John Stones, Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker.
Midfielders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Gallagher, Curtis Jones, Kobbie Mainoo, Adam Wharton, Declan Rice.
Forwards: Jude Bellingham, Jarrod Bowen, Eberechi Eze, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Anthony Gordon, Harry Kane, James Maddison, Cole Palmer, Bukayo Saka, Ivan Toney, Ollie Watkins.
Who from that 33 is at risk?
England will only take three goalkeepers, with James Trafford the most likely to miss out. Among the defenders Liverpool youngster Jarell Quansah and Everton ’s Jarrad Branthwaite appear the most probable candidates to be culled.
In midfield Crystal Palace ’s breakout star Adam Wharton would be a surprise inclusion, while Liverpool’s Curtis Jones is uncertain of a spot.
And among the forwards Jack Grealish could have a fight on his hands after a tricky season at Manchester City, with Palace’s Eberechi Eze pushing for inclusion. Newcastle ’s Anthony Gordon and West Ham ’s Jarrod Bowen, despite scoring 20 goals in his most prolific club season yet, cannot be certain of their spots either.
