England squad announcements live as Southgate axes three stars from Euro 2024

Must read

Who were the big names to miss out?

Before the disappointment experienced by the likes of James Maddison, several players didn’t even make the extended squad.

Some of those decisions were harsh – others more understandable.

Among those not selected were Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson, Reece James, Ben Chilwell, Dominic Solanke, Eric Dier, Jadon Sancho, Raheem Sterling and Ben White.

Mirror writers have their say..

No one wants to be part of the seven who miss out – but the same names keep cropping up.

We’ve given out take on who will be watching the Euros from home, rather than going to Germany.

Check it out here.

The long-term plan with Quansah

Jarrel Quansah was always one included in the provisional squad as a player for the long term who might benefit from being around the camp.

England boss Gareth Southgate might have even painted that picture to a few of the younger players – stressing the importance of the whole experience.

Liverpool defender Quansah, 21, is expected to follow James Maddison and Curtis Jones in leaving the squad.

But Quansah is definitely one for the future because he has had such a good season for Liverpool.

No official confirmation yet but England do train at lunchtime so clues may be clearer then about who will be involved against Iceland on Friday night and who will make the final squad of 26.

Southgate has spoken to a few of the players individually so fully expecting more names to come out today even though the FA only have to submit the final squad to UEFA by Friday 11pm.

When’s the deadline?

UEFA need the final Euro squads by 11pm on Friday.

It looks as if all the news will have filtered out of the England camp before that point, but that is the deadline Gareth Southgate has to work to.
