50′ England 1-0 Serbia
It’s probably fair to say England’s left side of Kieran Trippier and Phil Foden has been functional rather than fantastic.
Trippier has defended diligently and Foden has pressed with alacrity, but they haven’t offered much in attack compared, for example, to England’s right side with Kyle Walker and Bukayo Saka.
With the only (and best) natural left-back in the squad, Luke Shaw of Manchester United, still not quite fit yet, Trippier doing a decent, solid job is fine for now. But Southgate may be pondering how best to maximise Foden’s impact.
Maybe the answer in this kind of game is a more natural left-sided winger like Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon to offer width. We shall see.
