With regular season games now in place in the UK for more than a decade, the younger generation of NFL fans may not know that it was nearly 20 years ago that the NFL first came to Europe.
Rather than the Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles and Jacksonville Jaguars gracing these shores, it was the London Monarchs, Rhein Fire, Amsterdam Admirals and Scottish Claymores that fans had available to them.
As it turned out, NFL Europe was home to some massive names, in every sense of the word, including Super Bowl XX winner with the Chicago Bears, and future Hall of Famer, the legendary William Perry, aka ‘The Fridge’. Also, Kurt Warner also graced the league before his Super Bowl XXXIV win with the St Louis Rams.
Warner, Tom Coughlin, Brian Baldinger, Doug Marrone and Andrew Luck are among the names you can hear from in the documentary. We sat down with those involved to get the full story on how things got off the ground, what match days were like and the impact it had on the game.
