Turkey vs Portugal: UEFA Euro 2024 – BBC Sport

Must read

  • This will be the fourth meeting between Türkiye and Portugal at the UEFA EURO. Portugal have won all three of their previous encounters in the tournament, without conceding a single goal: 1-0 in 1996 (group stages), 2-0 in 2000 (quarter-finals) and 2-0 in 2008 (group stages).

  • In all competitions, Türkiye have only won two of their nine matches against Portugal (L7), both in friendly internationals: 3-1 in 1955 and 3-1 in 2012.

  • After winning their opening game of EURO 2024 against Georgia, Türkiye will be looking to win their first two games at a major tournament (World Cup/EUROs) for the first time ever.

  • Portugal have only lost one of their last nine group stage games at the UEFA European Championship (W4 D4), with that defeat coming against Germany in 2021 (2-4). Indeed, their last group stage loss in the competition against anyone other than Germany (defeats in 2021 and 2012) was back at EURO 2008 versus Switzerland (0-2).

  • Türkiye would equal their most victories in a single edition of the UEFA European Championship if they win here (two in 2008), while only at the 2002 FIFA World Cup have they ever won more than two matches at a major tournament (4).

  • Portugal made 30 crosses in their tournament opener against Czechia; the most of any team on MD1 at EURO 2024 and their most in a group stage game in the competition since EURO 2016 v Austria (36).

  • Türkiye had the most shots (22) and the highest expected goals total (3.01) of any team on MD1 at EURO 2024. Indeed, 11 different players had at least one shot for Vincenzo Montella’s side against Georgia; a joint-high in the opening round of the group stage, along with Germany (11 v Scotland).

  • Portugal midfielder Vitinha completed more passes under high-intensity pressure (59) than any other player on MD1 of EURO 2024, while only Toni Kroos (30) made more line-breaking passes than the 24-year-old in the opening round of the group stage (21).

  • Cristiano Ronaldo has never scored against Turkey, despite playing three matches against them. Only against Albania has he ever played more matches (4) without finding the back of the net for Portugal.

  • Hakan Çalhanoglu completed 88 passes against Georgia last time out; the most by a Türkiye player in a UEFA European Championship game.
