Referee who ignored Scotland penalty claim against Hungary is ‘AXED’

Must read

The Argentinian referee and VAR official who waved away Scotland’s late penalty claim against Hungary have reportedly been given the chop by UEFA.

Referee Facundo Tello and VAR Alejandro Hernandez have been axed alongside the two assistants that night, Gabriel Chade and Ezequiel Brailovsky.

Tello enraged Scotland boss Steve Clarke when Stuart Armstrong went down under an ugly challenge from Willi Orban in the 79th minute and nothing was given.

The Tartan Army were desperate for a goal to make the last-16 of Euro 2024 but failed to score and conceded in stoppage time as their dreams disintegrated

Now the entire refereeing team from that night alongside five other crews have been sent packing, according to The Sun

UEFA reportedly views the ordeal involving Scotland as a ‘major error’.

The team that took charge of Scotland’s final group game are one of six that have reportedly been sent home.

Scotland only managed to gain one point from their campaign.

They started off with a 5-1 defeat to hosts Germany on the opening day of the tournament, before drawing 1-1 with Switzerland and then suffered that 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Hungarians.

Scotland manager Clarke had been incensed, saying: ‘He’s from Argentina — why would I ask him (about it)?

‘He probably doesn’t speak the language. I don’t know.

‘Why is he here? Why is there not a European referee?’

He also insisted that it was ‘100 per cent’ a penalty and demanded: ‘What’s the point in VAR if they’re not going to come in on something like that?’

Clarke’s comments about Tello, who also refereed at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, are being scrutinised by UEFA.

European football’s governing body reportedly thinks VAR assistant Hernandez failed to intervene on two occasions during Scotland’s 1-0 loss to Hungary.

In that deal, Italian referee Maurizio Mariani has gone in the opposite direction to officiate in the Copa America this summer.

As well as the Armstrong incident, they felt Hungary could have had a penalty for Grant Hanley’s first-half elbow on Endre Botka.

Tello has been in Germany after an agreement between UEFA and CONMEBOL, the South American football confederation.

Tello is notorious for having once doled out 10 red cards in one match.

Steve Clarke was irate about the decision and asked ‘why is he here?’ in the aftermath
Six of the 19 officiating teams at the Euros have reportedly been dismissed after the groups

The 42-year-old brandished 10 red cards in a Champions Trophy final clash between Argentine giants Boca Juniors and Racing Club in November 2022.

That match had to be stopped with Racing 2-1 up because Boca Juniors only had six players left on the pitch – below the minimum limit of seven.
