The UK is set for a 30C scorching heatwave as it sweeps the country from the European Union after a sweltering period on the continent. Maps and charts show the European plume of hot air edging towards Britain – amid hopes of skyrocketing temperatures.
Warmer air pushing northwards from the continent looks set to send the mercury upwards later this week. Swathes of Europe is now seeing fairly settled weather, with warmer conditions in the Mediterranean, and heatwaves in Spain, Greece and Turkey, as well as Portugal.
The BBC outlook for July 15 to July 21 says it will be “trending somewhat drier”, adding: “In the third week of July, the long-term weather forecast models show lower pressure over north-west Europe or near the UK and weak high pressure further south. The almost seasonal temperatures in the UK could continue.

“At least southern parts of the UK could benefit from a weak high-pressure influence, with slightly drier, calmer and perhaps slightly warmer conditions. However, across much of the UK, low-pressure influence could be more stubborn, with spells of showery rain and brisk winds at times.
“Temperatures are therefore more likely to be rather subdued, particularly in the north and north-west.” But in the short-term, this week looks “wet”, with the BBC adding: “Conditions across much of the UK are likely to remain quite changeable and cooler, with low pressure influence prevailing. Spells of rain or heavier showers, some of them thundery, will be the predominant pattern over the weekend. Slightly higher temperatures are expected in south-east England on Sunday.
“Areas of low pressure should remain close to or pass over parts of the UK. Given this trend, there is a higher likelihood of changeable and at times windier conditions continuing next week. Northern parts of the UK remain at risk of slightly below seasonal temperatures on average. However, temperatures could be slightly higher early next week, at least in the south and south-east.”
