UK’s £13 railway journey named ‘best in Europe’

The Heart of Wales railway line, a 150 year old route stretching 121 miles through some of the UK’s most stunning landscapes, has been named one of Europe’s best rail journeys by renowned travel guide Lonely Planet. The line, which runs from the estuaries of south Wales to “one of England’s prettiest medieval cities”, was praised for offering “a spectrum of scenery”.

It shares the top 10 European train journeys list with Le Petit Train Juane in the French Pyrenees, The Berina Express in Switzerland and The Brenner Railway passing through Germany, Austria and Italy.

However, concerns over the future of this iconic line have been voiced by local councillors following news of a reduction in services. The line, which connects Swansea and Shrewsbury and passes through picturesque towns such as Llandeilo and Llandovery in south-west Wales and Craven Arms and Church Stretton further north, will see its services cut from five to four per day from December this year, according to WalesOnline.

This includes the removal of two late evening services to the towns of Llandovery and Llandindrod Wells, a decision made by operator Transport for Wales (TfW).

Carmarthenshire councillors have showcased serious concern about the Heart of Wales Line’s long-term future. They claim that decades of under-investment and service reductions, endorsed by Transport for Wales (TfW), might risk its longevity, reports the Express.

The councillors demand a full review of TfW’s decision by the Welsh Government.

The Heart of Wales Line incorporates many stops including request-only stations at locales such as Bynea, Llangennech, Pontarddulais, Pantyffynnon, Ammanford, and Llandybie, among others. Additionally, stops like Sugar Loaf, Hopton Heath, and Broome are part of the journey.

In 2023 Reporter Robert Harries embarked on the whole stretch of the line. He described his trip, saying: ” There’s great value for money to be enjoyed here. For £13 (one way) you can literally travel through the heart of Wales and take in all that it has to offer.”
