France warmly congratulates Alain Berset on his election as Secretary General of the Council of Europe following the vote by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on 25 June.
The Council of Europe, the oldest European intergovernmental organization, plays a crucial role in defending and promoting the rule of law and human rights in its 46 member States. The regulations it develops, including the Istanbul Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, and the Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law, are benchmark documents.
The Secretary General can count on the support of France, the organization’s host country, in fulfilling his mandate. (…)./.
