Austria star Marcel Sabitzer hit by an object thrown by fans

Austria star Marcel Sabitzer was struck by an item appeared to have been thrown Turkey supporters during their last-16 defeat at Euro 2024.

Sabitzer had previously seen plastic cups thrown in his direction as he went to take a corner as Austria aimed to fight back after Turkey had taken a 2-0 lead in Leipzig.

The midfielder appeared to be struck be an object when he returned to take a subsequent set piece.

Sabitzer briefly fell to the floor and clutched his head, while Turkey players appeared to appeal to their supporters not to thrown objects.

The Austrian star pointed out the object to match officials which was taken away by a member of staff.

Sabitzer was not the only player targeted by objects as he attempted to take set pieces during the match.

Plastic cups were also thrown by Austrian supporters at Turkish star Arda Guler during the second half.

Guler, the 19-year-old Real Madrid youngster, was seen turning to Austria supporters and pointing to his head after Turkey doubled their lead from his corner.

Merih Demiral had powerfully headed in Guler’s corner to take a 2-0 lead in the 59th minute.

The defender had given Turkey a first minute lead from another set piece at the Leipzig Arena.

Austria pulled a goal back in the second half through Michael Gregoritsch, after Stefan Posch flicked on Sabitzer’s corner.

European football’s governing body UEFA has hit nations with over £1million of fines during the tournament over the behaviour of supporters. 

Nations have been fined for various reasons, including the throwing of objects during matches.

Fines have also been issued for the lighting of fireworks, pitch invasions and crowd disturbances.

UEFA have also issued fines over the transmission of a message unfit for a sports event.
