On 28-29 May, Bioenergy Europe attended the second edition of the European Pellet Forum in Nantes, France, held as part of the Carrefour International du Bois trade fair.

The event was organised by Propellet France in collaboration with the European Pellet Council (EPC), and serves as a key forum for the wood pellet sector in Europe.

Founded in 2010 as a network within Bioenergy Europe, the EPC represents national pellet associations and related organisations from 18 countries.

The trade fair provided an excellent opportunity to connect with key global pellet industry stakeholders.

Bioenergy Europe said it is confident that pellets will become a leading renewable energy source in Europe, providing a standardised, sustainable and valuable energy solution for both individuals and businesses.

During the event, Jérémie Geelen, Bioenergy Europe’s market intelligence director, unveiled some numbers from the Pellet Report 2024 and discussed the challenging transition the pellet market underwent from 2022 to 2023.

This transition was characterised by several obstacles (pellet supply shortages, high prices, milder winters reducing the demand for heat), that forced the pellet market in a stagnation period.

The heating appliances market is the one that suffered the most, with substantial drops in sales.

However, sales are now recovering in countries with strong support for the sector and subsidies available, highlighting the importance of public support.

The trade association contributed to two more panels during the forum.

Agnieszka Jankowska, senior certification and fraud officer at ENplus®, discussed how the development of the ENplus market can improve fuel quality for consumers.

Jean-Marc Jossart, Bioenergy Europe secretary general, analysed the potential impacts of upcoming EU policies on the pellet industry.

”The Propellet France team is delighted to have been able to host and organise the second edition of the European Pellet Forum, held in conjunction with its bi-annual Propellet Event. The event attracted some 250 visitors from all over the world, and we would like to thank all the participants and our partners for making it such a success. We wish Poland every success in organising next year’s event,” said the organisers.
