Temperatures that feel like 30C could bake Britain later this month, amid a disappointing summer for weather, so far – but areas across England, Wales and Scotland could feel warmer very soon
Brits could be in for a spot of sun this month, according to one forecast, that predicts temperatures reaching close to 30C.
The Ventusky meteorological website has temperatures “feeling like” the equivalent of 30C in the south of England on June 27. Areas around the village of Pitney in Somerset, close to the town of Langport, can expect to bear the heat the most.
The actual temperatures will be just slightly lower, at just under 30C in some areas including 28.8C in Salisbury.
The hot weather, where temperatures are all slightly below 30C, range across south and western Wales, the West Midlands and the northwest and is expected around 4pm.
Areas as far north as Inverurie in Scotland may see temperatures of over 26C, the forecast indicates. Cooler temperatures are expected again either side of June 27.
The summer temperatures will be welcome new for many Brits amid a chilly-feeling June. Simon King, one of the BBC’s chief weather presenters put the recent trend down to low pressure moving across the mid-Atlantic Ocean and predicted that highs wouldn’t exceed 10C to 13C in the north and east or 14C and 17C elsewhere.
The big change to summer, he said, might not come until the end of June, with signs pointing towards a possible buildup of high pressure above the UK in the coming weeks. Ventusky’s predictions make for more positive reading on June 20-23, with higher temperatures in the UK that day seeing over 20C. There are predictions for over 23C in London on June 23.
Today, the Met Office has issued a weather warning for thunderstorms that are set to roar through the UK later this afternoon. In a statement, Britain’s national forecaster said showers and thunderstorms will become more widespread and last into the evening. Not everywhere will see thunderstorms, but they will be slow moving when they do hit, bringing lightning, hail and heavy rain with them.
“The heaviest showers and thunderstorms could produce as much as 20 mm of rain in less than an hour with one or two places seeing 30-40 mm in two-three hours,” the statement reads.
