Celtic see off Europe’s elite as Rangers can’t stop millennium trophy record

Must read

Scottish champions Celtic have surged beyond some of Europe’s heavyweights to become the most-decorated club since the millennium on the continent.

Brendan Rodgers’ secured a domestic double by steering his side to Scottish Cup victory over Rangers at Hampden on Saturday – with on-loan Norwich City striker Adam Idah proving to the hero as the Light Blues’ failed to halt the Hoops’ adding more silverware to the Celtic Park trophy cabinet. It follows on from Celtic surging to the Premiership title following a miserable end to the season for Philippe Clement and his side.

But with the party still rumbling on for delighted Parkhead diehards another record has been picked up along the way. The Hoops have now become the most-decorated European side of the 21st century after scooping their 40th honour since the 2000/01 campaign – which includes 18 league titles alongside 12 Scottish Cups and 10 League Cup triumphs.

That takes the club beyond Bayern Munich – who endured a disappointing trophy-less campaign. The German giants have a total of 37 major honours – including 17 Bundesliga crowns and 3 Champions League victories.

Lincoln Red Imps sit at 36 having claimed 21 Gibraltar National League titles along the way. Dinamo Zagreb (32) and Sheriff Tiraspol (31) round out the top five of Europe’s most successful clubs this millennium.

Linfield, Shakhtar Donetsk, Real Madrid and Barcelona all sit on 28 honours in the standings. Paris Saint-Germain boast 27.
