CHENNAI: Chennai mayor R Priya will visit Spain, France and Italy to learn about solid waste management practices adopted by these countries.
She will leave for Spain on Saturday night. From there, she will go to France and then to Italy. The mayor will be accompanied by deputy mayor Mahesh Kumar and city corporation’s health officials. They will return to Chennai on June 24.
Speaking to TOI, Priya said Urbaser’s head office is in Spain. “We will be visiting it first,” she said.
“We are beginning to biomining the Kodungaiyur dumpyard, and we want some knowledge sharing in that. Secondly, we also want a bin-free city and so we want to know how the European countries are implementing it,” she said.
She added that the waste management is being privatised in the city and so the trip would help the GCC improvise and monitor the garbage collection and processing services.
