Croatian police have arrested a Czech national after he took an explosive device into a restricted military area, which later detonated, resulting in the death of a nine-year-old child, as reported by the authorities.

Croatian media further said that the deceased is reportedly suspect’s son.

Additionally, three Czech residents were also injured in the explosion that happened near Zadar, a city on the central coast.

Police reported that the 46-year-old suspect, who was accompanied by family and friends in the car, “entered the prohibited area with a child and allowed him to take an explosive device”.

They further stated that the suspect then “personally placed (it) in his car.”

Meanwhile, the vehicle later broke down and the child passenger removed the explosive device from the car, at which point it exploded.

“The man did not comply with the clearly displayed written warnings in both Croatian and English at a marked dangerous area of a military training ground,” said the Croatian police.

They said they had charged him with committing a “serious criminal act” and “endangering life and property”. An investigation is currently underway, including forensic analyses to determine the type of explosive device involved.
