We are into the death throes of the group stage at Euro 2024 and thus the final chance for countries to make it into the last-16 has very much arrived.
With Portugal virtually assured to finish top of Group F, both Czechia and Turkey have the chance to ensure progression in Hamburg this evening.
Uefa has decided to make qualification for the last-16 about as confusing as the enigma code so before we get any deeper let’s run through the various permutations.
Turkey sit on three points and are therefore in by far the strongest position of the sides in Group F, Portugal aside.
While a 3-0 loss to Portugal has not been helpful for their goal difference, Vincenzo Montella’s side know that either a win or a draw will be enough to see them through.
In fact, Turkey can still draw and finish second in the group if Georgia fails to beat Portugal.
For Czechia, it’s a ‘win and you’re in’ situation. Anything less will see them eliminated, so in truth the equation is as simple as it can be.
These two sides are about as divergent stylistically as could be. Turkey are perhaps the most cavalier side in the competition, roaring forward at every opportunity only to leave gaping holes at the back – see both Portugal and Georgia games as evidence.
Here, they face the pragmatist’s pragmatists in Czechia, a side built on rigidity and defensive organisation.
Something, as they say, has to give. Stick with Telegraph Sport this evening to find out what.
