England enjoyed the narrowest of lucky escapes to secure a 2-1 win over Slovakia in their Euro 2024 last-16 clash after a last-gasp bicycle kick by Jude Bellingham took the match to extra time, before Harry Kane headed the winner.

England were absolutely abject against a Slovakia team who were aggressive from the start and pressed their opponents relentlessly, taking the lead with an Ivan Schranz strike from a counter-attack in the 25th minute.

Declan Rice hit the post from long range as England desperately sought an equaliser but it wasn’t until five minutes into added time that Bellingham finally found the net to undeservedly save the Three Lions. It was a first shot on target in the game for Gareth Southgate’s men and Kane then headed home in the first minute of extra time.

Southgate will have a number of questions to answer ahead of the quarter-final, but will face an anxious wait over the fitness of Kieran Trippier, who was contending with injury in the build up to the game, and was taken off in the 66th minute after a heavy challenge.

England will face Switzerland in the quarter-finals after they knocked out defending champions Italy with a 2-0 win on Saturday.

Harry Kane: England squad closer than ever after dramatic win

England captain Harry Kane believes the manner of the late comeback win over Slovakia can bring the squad even closer together as they prepare for a Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland.

Kane headed home in extra time to secure a 2-1 victory but only after Jude Bellingham’s sensational overhead kick had levelled the scores deep into stoppage time.

It was another disjointed display by Gareth Southgate’s side in Gelsenkirchen but they rallied at the death to make sure their Euro 2024 adventure continues into the last eight.

Jordan Pickford lauds ‘golden boy’ Jude Bellingham after England beat Slovakia

After winning Group C in unconvincing fashion, the Euro 2020 runners-up were on the brink of a humiliating exit akin to Iceland eight years ago in what would almost certainly have been Gareth Southgate’s last match.

England looked set to fail in their bid to cancel out Ivan Schranz’s opener for wily Slovakia, with Phil Foden seeing a goal ruled out for offside by the VAR, Harry Kane wasting a great chance and Declan Rice hitting a post.

But Real Madrid star Bellingham scored a jaw-dropping leveller five minutes into stoppage time, with his overhead kick followed by a Kane header early in extra time as Southgate’s side won 2-1.

England’s memorable goals

David Beckham v Ecuador, 2006 World Cup

A comfortable group stage saw Sven Goran Eriksson’s England side paired with Ecuador in the 2006 World Cup in Germany and a serene route to the quarter-finals looked on the cards. But England laboured against the South American side and were lucky not to be behind in the first half. But Beckham, as he so often did for his country, stepped up and made the difference, curling in a trademark free-kick from 30 yards. It set up a last-eight tie with Portugal, who won on penalties.

Jude Bellingham faces possible ban over gesture to crowd during England’s Euro 2024 win

Jude Bellingham faces a possible ban at Euro 2024 after Uefa opened an investigation into a gesture he made while celebrating the spectacular overhead kick scored against Slovakia in their last-16 tie on Sunday.

In the aftermath of his goal, Bellingham was seen shouting “Who else?!” as he ran over to England fans after scoring. Video showed the Real Madrid forward then kiss his hand and grab his crotch in a gesture which appeared to be directed towards the side of the pitch.

England’s memorable goals

David Platt v Belgium, 1990 World Cup

With England heading towards a penalty shootout after a drab last-16 performance against Belgium at Italia 90, Platt scored one the most memorable goals in the country’s history. Paul Gascoigne chipped in a free-kick, the Aston Villa midfielder watched it over his shoulder and then hooked it into the far corner. It spawned a famous piece of commentary by John Motson, who screamed: “And England have done it, in the last minute of extra time”. Platt scored again as England beat Cameroon in the quarter-final before losing on penalties to Germany in the last four.

Jude Bellingham wrote his name in the history books

Jude Bellingham wrote himself into England folklore as his stunning injury-time equaliser kept his country’s Euro 2024 hopes alive.

But here are some other goals that were just as important.

England’s talismanic midfielder had already lit up the 1966 World Cup with his ‘belting the ball’ goal against Mexico in the group stage and he was at it again against Portugal in the semi-final. After scoring into an empty net to put his side 1-0 up before the break, Charlton grabbed a crucial second in the second half with a crisp finish from just inside the penalty area. It proved decisive as Eusebio’s penalty gave Portugal hope, but Sir Alf Ramsey’s men saw it out to reach the World Cup final on home soil.

Bellingham’s spectacular overhead kick in the 95th minute sent the match into extra time, where captain Harry Kane gave England the lead. The Three Lions then held firm to advance to the quarter-finals.

England’s problems at left-back

England centre-back Guehi is suspended after collecting his second booking of the tournament, but Luke Shaw could be available having been out since February with a hamstring issue.

Southgate admitted England have “a little bit of problem with our balance without a left-footed left-back” but decided against bringing him on in Gelsenkirchen.

“I think that’s got a chance,” he added. “I mean, we could have put him on, but he’s done so little full team training that that would have been a huge risk.

“A bit more training, a little bit more evidence for us of the level that he’s at will be helpful.”
