As England continues to reel from their devastating Euros defeat, many fans have taken to social media to lighten the mood with a string of cheeky posts and memes to lessen the sting
After weeks of hard fought effort on the pitch, England fans were fully behind their beloved team at this year’s UEFA Euros 2024 final, as the players took on Spain for the final time in the hopes of securing victory. Yet sadly, despite daring to dream of bringing the coveted trophy home, England fell at the final hurdle, when Spain secured the win with a last minute goal from Mikel Oyarzabal, which cinched victory from the grasp of their rivals.
Understandably, the loss stung for many fans, who had been eagerly awaiting for 58 years for the men’s football team to claim the title, however, it wasn’t all doom and gloom online, with several cheeky England supporters having tried to lighten the mood with a few choice memes to poke fun at Spain’s success and lessen the sting of their own defeat.
Taking to twitter to reflect on the defeat, one fan wrote: “Someone give that football a GPS. It’s been coming home for 58 years but it keeps getting lost #itscominghome.” Only to be met with a cheeky response: “It’s already home… the women brought it home.”

A second viewer also weighed in and quipped “So, anyone know what time it’s coming home then?! I just do not want to get stuck in all the traffic that this victory parade will create! #ItsNotComingHome”
A third football fan also took to social media to share a historical reference, as they posted: “Armada Avenged” alongside an illustration of the defeated Spanish Armada from all the way back in 1588!
Meanwhile another fan tried to lighten the mood with a photograph of four adorable cats in England shirts watching the match, as they penned: “Cheer up guys, at least England played well and it is only a game after all. #AIArt #England #CatsOfTwitter #itsnotcominghome.”
There were also a creative abundance of memes from pop-culture adding to the proceedings, with one fan cheekily invoking Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask for their dig at England in the wake of Spain’s success.
The Simpsons edits also proved to be very popular among fans, with many people retweeting the same images of a tearful Bart Simpson in full England kit, following the narrow defeat at the hands of the Spaniards.
Bullseye also proved to be a popular reference, with several fans sharing memes of legendary host Jim Bowen alongside the Euros trophy and the immortal words: “Here’s what you could’ve won…”
Yet all humour aside, social media was mainly awash with people praising both England and Spain for their efforts on the pitch, even if it hadn’t been enough to secure England the victory that they had initially hoped for. In fact, there were several positive messages saying that as heartbreaking and “gutting” as defeat had been, there was still “always next time” as they continued to cheer on their beloved football team to come back stronger in their next international match.
