England’s next game vs Slovakia at Euro 2024: Date, time, team news and TV channel

Must read

England will play Slovakia in the Euro 2024 last-16 on Sunday.

Gareth Southgate’s side topped Group C despite recording underwhelming draws against Denmark and Slovenia after winning their opener against Serbia.

Luke Shaw has given England a boost by declaring he will be back from his hamstring injury to play a part in the last-16 tie.

Slovakia were confirmed as England’s opponents upon the conclusion of the group stages on Wednesday night.

Francesco Calzona’s team finished on four points in Group E, where a 1-0 win against Belgium and 2-1 defeat to Ukraine was followed by Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Romania.

Slovakia are 45th in the Fifa world rankings – 40 spots below England. England won 2-1 at Wembley in the last meeting between the sides in September 2017 during qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.

The reverse fixture, in September 2016, was a 1-0 England victory in Sam Allardyce’s only game in charge of the national team.

When is England’s next game?

England will play in the last-16 of Euro 2024 on June 30.

Where is England’s next game being played?

The match will be played in Gelsenkirchen at the Veltins Arena, which is home to Bundesliga 2 club Schalke. England have already played at this stadium in the Euros, beating Serbia 1-0 in the opening game.

What TV channel is it on?

It will be broadcast live on ITV1 with coverage starting at 3.30pm. Roy Keane, Ian Wright, Gary Neville and Karen Carney are among ITV’s pundits for the tournament.

Luke Shaw has declared himself fit to play a part in England’s last-16 clash against Slovakia on Sunday in Gelsenkirchen.

The Manchester United left-back has been out since February after setbacks recovering from a hamstring injury but is scheduled to return to full team training on Thursday and will be ready for the clash at AufSchalke Arena at the weekend.

When asked after the draw against Slovenia whether he was fit, Shaw replied: “Next game.”

Shaw was described as a “long shot” by Gareth Southgate when he was named in the provisional Euro squad, having been sidelined for so long.

There were initial hopes of him being fit for around this stage of the finals, possibly for the final group game. He was named as a substitute in Tuesday’s clash against Slovenia without being considered to come on.

Shaw was the only left-back named in his squad and Kieran Trippier has moved across from his usual right-back position to fill in, with England looking unbalanced in their Group C matches.

While it would be a gamble starting Shaw after more than four months out, having Shaw as an option will be a huge boost to Southgate. The United full-back revealed before the tournament that he rushed back to play for his club and broke down again.

What sort of team are Slovakia?

Slovakia made it to the knockout stages as one of the four best third-placed sides. They finished behind Romania and Belgium in Group E, where all teams finished on four points.

Slovakia’s first-choice goalkeeper Martin Dubravka will be well known to England’s Anthony Gordon, who is pushing for a start in Gelsenkirchen.

Slovakia have never beaten England in six attempts, with five losses and one draw.

What are the odds?

  • England to win: 3/7
  • Slovakia to win: 9/1
