Paul Ince believes Gareth Southgate deserves more credit for his achievements since becoming England boss.
Ince told Bet365that no replacement stands out for Southgate and that his successor will have a difficult task.
“A replacement for Gareth Southgate doesn’t scream out at me, it depends on the direction that the FA want to go,” Ince said.
“No matter what people say about Gareth, he’s produced some great moments, obviously people mention not finishing off chances in the Italy game, but he’s brought the England squad together, he’s brought the fans together.
“Sometimes when I was with England, players wouldn’t turn up. They would make out they were injured because they couldn’t be bothered travelling.
“I think Gareth’s got that unity, where players want to go play for England, they want to be part of it. He’s galvanised that squad and changed them and the culture and environment of the England national team. That’s a great thing to do. It’s one of the hardest things to do in football. And he’s done that very, very well.”
