England manger Gareth Southgate brought on Cole Palmer and Ollie Watkins with nine minutes remaining.
Then in the final minute or normal time, Palmer played the ball in to Watkins, who turned and fired just inside the far post to spark jubilation among the England players, staff and fans.
“The fact that Ollie comes on and produces the moment he does from Cole’s pass, it epitomises what they’ve got,” said Southgate.
“Their dedication to each other, the way they’ve grown and moulded as a group, it’s been absolutely fantastic. All of the players have been ready to come in to the games and it’s brilliant for them that so many have had these moments that have been so important for the team.”
