Home to more than 350 beaches across the country and countless holiday resorts, Portugal is a popular holiday destination in Europe. The United Kingdom accounted for over 2.3 million visitors to Portugal, with more than half arriving in the Algarve, according to the most recent data from Statista.

This Algarve region of the country received, in 2023, well over one million British tourists, who were only surpassed in number by Portuguese visitors.

Now, Portugal has been named as the “best holiday destination for over 50s” for the upcoming summer.

Mobility specialists Oak Tree Mobility have created an index of the best destinations, by assessing each country’s safety, median age, ‘bucket list’ activities, and for travellers who need to consider accessibility requirements for themselves or their party, they also looked at the number of accessible hotels available.

According to the report: “When it comes to the best destination, Portugal scored the most points for its high number of ‘bucket list’ activities, high median age, and safety relative to other countries on the study.

“With three in four Portugal hotels being listed as wheelchair accessible, the country also scores highly for travellers who have to consider mobility in their holiday plans.”

The report added: “The country also scores well for its higher median age – half of Portugal’s population is above 44.6 years of age – suggesting older travellers may find themselves more at ease, with more services and activities geared towards them.”

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing beach holiday or want to soak up history and culture, Portugal is a nation rich in a variety of experiences.

Experts from Newmarket Holidays rounded up three of their top recommended destinations in Portugal for over 50s. For an all-encompassing city break, Porto was recommended thanks to its rich history, stunning vineyards and unique cuisine. The region is also one of the best spots for wine tasting.

Alternatively, the experts recommend visiting Sintra for something a little more unique.

“Located just outside of Lisbon, it is home to some of Portugal’s most impressive palaces, colourful gardens and panoramic views,” they said. “Its historical centre has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it even more worth the visit.”

Of course, with stunning coastlines and beautiful beaches, many people turn to Portugal for a hit of sand and sea. The experts from Newmarket Holidays recommend heading to Cascais, known for its gorgeous sand dunes, crystal-clear waters and fantastic seafood restaurants.
