European racing ‘can’t compare’, visitors say

Must read

A pair of Luxembourg visitors were full of praise for the New Zealand racing scene in Cromwell yesterday.

Lydia and Jean-Claude Thiry had been to New Zealand several times before, but yesterday was their first time at the annual Wyndham Harness Racing Club meet, held at the Cromwell Racecourse.

The couple both follow horse racing in Europe but agreed the atmosphere at the races in New Zealand was superior.

European races focused on placing and winning bets while New Zealand’s provided a more comfortable day out for the whole family, Mr Thiry said.

“[It] can’t compare,” Mrs Thiry said.

She said the couple had thoroughly enjoyed their time in Central Otago.

“A wonderful place, landscape [and] people.”

Mr Thiry said it had been well worth the trip.

Wyndham Harness Racing Club president Bathen Muir said when the club heard the couple were from far afield, it decided to “show them some hospitality”.

The couple enjoyed the races from the president’s box and viewed one race from the back of the mobile start truck — sitting just ahead of the horses for the race.

“We enjoy it … the club enjoys providing a good day out,” Mr Muir said.

Mr Muir is expecting high attendance for tomorrow when racing continues from noon.

There will be free entertainment for children.
