Carberry, who rode seven Cheltenham Festival winners, is hoping to secure a nomination to run as a Fine Gael candidate four years after she retired from the saddle
Pioneering former jockey Nina Carberry is aiming to win at the ballot box, four years after retiring from the saddle.
Over nearly 20 years Carberry, whose father Tommy and brother Paul were also top jockeys, became Ireland’s amateur champion twice and one of the most successful amateur riders in the jumps sphere.
She rode more than 400 winners, including seven at the Cheltenham Festival and recorded her biggest success when Organisedconfusion won the 2011 Irish Grand National.
Since retirement Carberry, 39, has won a new public following by winning Ireland’s version of ‘Strictly’, Dancing With The Stars in 2022 and appearing as a judge on the show, Ireland’s Fittest Family.
She is seeking selecting for one of five seats in the her local Midlands North West constituency.
Introducing herself to voters she said: “I am a champion jockey, a businesswoman, a sports coach, an author, and even a participant on Dancing with the Stars and Ireland’s Fittest Family.
“In the Ireland and Europe of today, it is more important than ever for those who believe they can make a difference to put their hand up to make things happen.
“As a mother of two, that is why I want to contest the European elections for Fine Gael this June to ensure a bright future for all.”
She added: “Honesty, hard work, and plain-talking define my approach.
“I would consider it a huge privilege to run for election for Fine Gael and have the chance to represent the people of Midlands Northwest.
“I have proven myself in sport and business and look forward to bringing my drive and determination to this new opportunity.”
