Germany might await England in last 16 at Euro 2024 after drab Denmark draw

Must read

England fans know their team are already close to sealing their place in the knockout stages of Euro 2024.

The Three Lions beat Serbia 1-0 in their opening game before drawing 1-1 with Denmark, meaning one more point from their last game will see them qualify for the knockout stages.

Should England qualify, Gareth Southgate‘s side could face anyone from previous World Cup champions to relative minnows.

It’s complicated, so talkSPORT.com has taken a look at the possible opponents in the round of 16 for England…

If England finish top

Should England win the group, they will face a third-place team from either Group D, E or F on Sunday, June 30 at 5pm UK time in Gelsenkirchen.

In Group D, the Netherlands and France have four points after two games, so they are unlikely to be third.

This leaves Poland or Austria.

But after Austria beat the Poles 3-1 in Berlin, there is a very good chance that Ralf Rangnick’s men will take that last qualification spot.

In Group E, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine and Belgium have a win each, meaning it could be any of these teams that await England.

And in Group F, Turkey and Portugal were expected to be the top two, and after two matches, they are.

Things could change, but as it stands, Georgia or the Czech Republic are the most likely options.

If England finish second

Should England finish second, they will play the winner of Group A on Saturday, June 29 at 8pm UK time in Dortmund.

There are only two teams that can finish top in Group A – Germany and Switzerland.

Julian Nagelsmann‘s side are currently leading the way after two wins and seven goals scored.

They face the Swiss in their last match and know if they avoid defeat, they will take top spot.

Of all the teams England wouldn’t want to face in the round of 16, Germany has to be up there.

If England finish third

Should England progress as one of the best third-place teams, they would play on Monday, July 1 at 8pm UK time in Frankfurt.

They would play the winner from Group F, which is Portugal.

Roberto Martinez’s side thrashed Turkey 3-0 to claim a place in the round of 16 and guarantee top spot.

Portugal are one of the favourites to go all the way at Euro 2024, so that would also be a very tough game for the Three Lions.
