NEW DELHI: Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico chose to forgive his shooter in a statement posted on social media, his first appearance since the assassination attempt.

“I feel no hatred towards the stranger who shot me. I forgive him and let him sort out what he did and why he did it in his own head,” said Fico stating that he’ll not file any charges or seek compensation.

Fico also stated that he didn’t believe his attack was the act of a “lone lunatic,” and called the attacker as “an activist of the Slovak opposition”.

In his video message, Fico also stated that he plans to gradually resume his duties later this month. “If everything goes as planned, I could gradually return to work at the turn of June and July,” he said.

Fico was attacked on May 15 in the central town of Handlova as he greeted supporters following a government meeting. The gunman, identified by Slovak media as 71-year-old poet Juraj Cintula, has been charged with premeditated attempted murder and is currently in custody.

After the attack, Fico was transported to a hospital in Banska Bystrica, where he underwent two extensive surgeries. He remained in the hospital until May 31, when he was discharged for home treatment.
