Inside Jarell Quansah axe as Gareth Southgate sticks to England blueprint

Gareth Southgate is finalising his England squad for Euro 2024 and Liverpool defender Jarrell Quansah is among the players who have missed out, with James Maddison and Curtis Jones also dropped

Jarell Quansah was always one included in the provisional squad as a player for the long term who might benefit from being around the camp.

England boss Gareth Southgate might have even painted that picture to a few of the younger players – stressing the importance of the whole experience. Liverpool defender Quansah, 21, is expected to follow James Maddison and Curtis Jones in leaving the squad.

But Quansah is definitely one for the future because he has had such a good season for Liverpool. “Jarell had a super season with Liverpool, I mean you’ve only got to see the games that his manager picked him for,” Southgate said last month.

“He was in the team and a couple of other high-profile players weren’t in that position, so that was a sign of how well Jurgen (Klopp) thought he was doing. He again has had an amazing transition this season from a loan spell further down the leagues last year [and] adapted to life in the Premier League really well.

“[He has] some great attributes as a centre-back so we’re looking forward to seeing him and building on what we saw last time with Jarrad Branthwaite as well.”

The FA have to submit the final squad to UEFA by Friday 11pm, but Southgate has already spoken to a few of the players individually ahead of the friendly against Iceland.

Quansah and Jones are unsurprising omissions given they were the only two uncapped outfield players in the squad, while Maddison was left out amid fierce competition for the wide and forward areas.
