Laver Cup 2023: Who’s playing? What’s the schedule? Will Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray play? – Eurosport

Must read

There were tears as 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer was joined at the O2 Arena by Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray to say goodbye to tennis.

The Laver Cup returns this September with a new cast as Team Europe and Team World battle it out for the sixth time.

Who will be playing this year? When and where is the 2023 Laver Cup? How to watch the Laver Cup? What’s the format? And will Federer be back at the tournament again?

We run through everything you need to know about this year’s Laver Cup…

What is the Laver Cup?

The Laver Cup is tennis’ version of golf’s Ryder Cup – a team event which sees points won for the winner of each match.

Six players from Team Europe and six players from Team World will go head-to-head across singles and doubles match in a race to reach 13 points.

When and where is the 2023 Laver Cup?

The Laver Cup has so far alternated each year between the USA and Europe.

This year it will be played in Canada for the first time at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver.

The event will run from September 22 to 24.

Who is playing the 2023 Laver Cup?

The teams for this year’s Laver Cup look very different to 2022.

Federer isn’t playing following his retirement (but will be in attendance, more on that later), and Nadal, Djokovic and Murray will also not be on Team Europe.

Leading Team Europe this time will be Casper Ruud and Andrey Rublev.

Stefanos Tsitsipas pulled out due to injury and has been replaced by 19-year-old Arthur Fils, while Alejandro Davidovich Fokina replaced the injured Holger Rune.

Hubert Hurkacz and veteran Gael Monfils are also on Team Europe.

Team World will be headed by Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime and American duo Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe.

Tommy Paul, Francisco Cerundolo and Ben Shelton are also on the team, and Christopher Eubanks and Milos Raonic are alternates.

The team captains will again be Bjorn Borg (Team Europe) and John McEnroe (Team World).

“I’m looking forward to bringing the team together in Vancouver,” said McEnroe.

“It is a talented group, with both experience and youth. Taylor, Frances, Felix and Tommy were all part of our win in London and that gives us a lot of confidence coming into this year. We’re feeling good about our chances.”

Will Carlos Alcaraz be playing the Laver Cup?

Carlos Alcaraz has taken the tennis world by storm over the last two years, reaching world No. 1 and winning the US Open and Wimbledon.

Alcaraz is not on the Team Europe roster in Vancouver.

Who won the last Laver Cup?

While Federer’s tearful retirement was the main talking point from the 2022 Laver Cup, it was also the first time that Team World lifted the trophy.

Having lost the first four editions of the Laver Cup, Team World triumphed 13-8 last year.

Auger-Aliassime was one of the standout players for Team World, winning his doubles match to start the final day and then beating Djokovic in straight sets.

Will Roger Federer be at the Laver Cup?

He won’t be playing at this year’s Laver Cup, but Federer will be in Vancouver.

Federer, who is a co-founder of the Laver Cup, will be at the tournament across all three days and will flip the coin for the last match on Friday evening.

He will then return to the court afterwards for an interview, for which fans can submit questions.

Two fans at each session will also be randomly selected to sit courtside and meet Federer.

What’s the Laver Cup schedule?

All three of the days are scheduled to have three singles matches and one doubles match.

The final day could be shorter as the last matches will only be played if needed to decide the result.

Play will start at 9pm UK time on Friday and Saturday, and 8pm on Sunday.

  • Day 1: 2 x singles in day session, 1 x singles and 1 x doubles in night session
  • Day 2: 2 x singles in day session, 1 x singles and 1 x doubles in night session
  • Day 3: 1 x doubles, followed by 3 x singles (if needed)

Rune ‘can’t wait’ to play Laver Cup

After a breakout 18 months, Holger Rune is excited to make his Laver Cup debut for Team Europe.

“I’m so honoured to be part of Team Europe in Vancouver this year,” said the world No. 4.

“I’ve watched Laver Cup over the past few years and love the event. The competition is so intense and getting to really know the personalities of your rivals so unique. It has been a goal of mine to make the team and I can’t wait to be a part of it.”

Rune could be the highest-ranked player on Team Europe as they look to reclaim the trophy.

“Holger has had a really impressive season and is one of the leading players of the next generation,” said Team Europe captain Bjorn Borg.

“He’s proved he is more than capable of beating the world’s best and I am looking forward to welcoming him to Team Europe in Vancouver.”
