Croatia is becoming an established alternative to Greece and Spain for UK tourists – but there is a little-known island which is blowing people’s minds. Brits on holiday in Croatia will often visit popular holiday destinations such as Dubrovnik, Split, or Zagreb but there’s a lesser-known island that’s worth a visit.
However, the lesser-known island of Cres is an alternative to Greece’s Mykonos, Spain’s Majorca, or Italy’s Capri. Despite being one of Croatia’s largest islands, it has managed to dodge the bulk of tourist traffic.
The Telegraph described Cres as Croatia’s “forgotten island that costs half as much as Hvar.” Nestled between Pula and Krk, travellers looking to explore Cres should head to Rijeka Airport on the island of Krk.

While you can’t go direct from Birmingham – albeit there are flights to other parts of Croatia – EasyJet offers direct flights from London Gatwick to Cres.
Upon landing, visitors can hop on a catamaran or take a local bus to reach the island of Cres. Home to around 3,000 residents, Cres sees its population swell during the summer months as tourists flock to enjoy the Mediterranean climate, which can soar to 30C in peak season but dips to a cool 5C in winter.
Despite its tranquillity, Cres doesn’t skimp on attractions, offering plenty for visitors to do. The hub of activity is found in Cres Town, where holidaymakers can explore historic sites such as the town walls, the Venetian Tower, and the Church of St Mary.
Crumbling stone buildings and a Romanesque chapel are housed in the hilltop town of Lubenice. From the main square, visitors can spot various pebble coves nestled on the coastline, reachable via a series of steep trails.
The Telegraph published an article last year stating: “Prices in Croatia have been carefully converted since it adopted the euro in January, rather than being bumped up.”
According to the author, who holidayed in Cres, a cappuccino could be acquired for just €1.73 (equivalent to £1.50). Other meals and beverages are affordably priced; a three-litre box of wine is obtainable for as low as £10, while a pizza meal costs approximately £5 per person.
Currently, most overnight stays consist of camping sites, guesthouses, and homestays until the planned five-star hotel launches on the island next year. Camping Zdovica, one such campsite, provides plots for booking at merely £10.
