Slovenia play their first-ever knockout match at the Euros, with a tough match against Portugal and their superstar striker Cristiano Ronaldo.
“This is a new milestone for the Slovenian national team, for Slovenia as a whole,” midfielder Adam Gnezda Cerin told reporters on the eve of the match in Frankfurt. “I think the match will be a nice evening for all of us because you dream of such matches as a little child.”
Slovenia reached the last 16 with draws in Group C against Denmark, Serbia and England, extending their unbeaten run to nine games.
But they are very much underdogs against Group F winners Portugal; this is the second most lopsided mismatch by FIFA world rankings of the round of 16. There are 51 ranking places between number six Portugal and number 57 Slovenia, although there were 66 between number eight Spain and number 74 Georgia.
Slovenia will also face an increasingly frustrated Ronaldo, who is still looking for his first goal of Euro 2024 – which would be a record-extending 15th European Championship goal for the 39-year-old.
