Travellers in Germany are facing more disruption this week as both Lufthansa and Deutsche Bahn are again hit by strike action.
Both transport companies had to severely cut back services last week due to industrial action by two unions as part of separate long-running pay disputes.
Now a new strike by cabin crew union UFO will affect Lufthansa’s flights on Tuesday and Wednesday (12-13 March), with crew set to take action at Frankfurt airport on Tuesday and then at Munich on Wednesday.
This strike follows two days of industrial action last week by a separate union Verdi, which represents Lufthansa’s ground staff.
“As a result, the airline will have to adjust its flight programme on both days,” said Lufthansa in an online update. “Guests whose flights are affected by the UFO strike are currently being rebooked. This process has the highest priority for us and is still ongoing. We therefore ask for your patience.
“Guests whose booking has already been processed will receive information about the cancellation of their flight and, of course, rebooking options individually by email or in the Lufthansa app.”
Transport services in the country will also be severely disrupted by the latest “short notice” strike by the GDL union, which represents Deutsche Bahn’s train drivers, on Tuesday (12 March).
DB said this latest strike would cause its train services to be “massively affected nationwide” on Tuesday
“During the strike, DB will once again implement a basic service on long-distance, regional and S-Bahn services,” said the train operator in an update to passengers.
“The basic offer will be published step by step in the timetable information on bahn.de and in the DB Navigator.”
DB said it was also giving passengers on long-distance services the option of bringing their journey forward to Monday (11 March) to avoid the strike period.
