Major power outage hits south-eastern Europe during heatwave

Must read

A major power outage hit most of the Balkans on Friday, disrupting businesses, shutting down traffic lights and leaving people sweltering without air conditioning in the middle of a heatwave.

Montenegro’s energy minister said the shutdown was caused by a sudden increase in power consumption brought on by high temperatures, and by the heat itself overloading systems.

Temperatures this week soared to more than 40 degrees Celsius across the south-eastern European region, reaching unusual heights for mid-June.

Montenegrin authorities said that the outage that lasted for several hours in the country’s power distribution system left almost the entire nation without electricity, while similar problems were reported in the coastal part of Croatia, and in Bosnia and Albania.

“The failure occurred as a result of a heavy load on the network, a sudden increase in power consumption due to high temperature and the high temperatures themselves,” Montenegro’s energy minister, Sasa Mujovic, said in a TV broadcast.
