Martin Lewis warns ‘four million’ UK tourists flying to Europe this summer

Martin Lewis’ Money Saving Expert has issued holiday warning for anyone travelling to Europe this summer. The team urged holidaymakers to check if their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is still valid, as 4.3 million are set to expire this year.

BBC star Mr Lewis’ team wrote: “Going to the EU? Check if your EHIC is valid – 4.3m expire this year – they’re totally free. These cards give access to state-run hospitals or GPs in EU countries for the same price as a local – so if it’s free for them, it’s free for you.

“Yet check point 9 on your card, as 4.3m become invalid this year. If so, you’ll need to get a new card – it’s now called a GHIC (as it’s been rebranded a ‘Global’ card, though in essence still covers mostly the same European countries). Yet…”

Mr Lewis’ team went on, writing in the latest Money Saving Exprrt (MSE) newsletter: “Never pay to get an EHIC or GHIC. It is always free, beware shyster sites trying to charge you for ‘fast tracks’ or other stuff, that’s nonsense.

“See how to safely get a free GHIC.” The ITV star’s team said: “Similar applies to ESTA / Passports / Visas. Always check you’re on the official site, or use these safe links. See Copycat websites warning.” MSE reader Jerry said:”Friend of mine used his GHIC in January, needed an op while away, I was really surprised how much it covered, it’s worth having.”

MSE reader Margaret said: “I applied for mine after reading about it on your website some time ago. I also have insurance with my bank. Last October I had a fall in Spain resulting in bad facial injuries. An ambulance was sent for, the paramedic asked if I wanted to go to a private or public hospital, I did not have a clue where to go.

“He said if you’ve got an EHIC card I would advise public. They were marvellous, I was seen in maxi facial and had stitches in my mouth, nose and face. I did not have to pay anything. I am always advising friends to apply for this card which is free.”
