Merih Demiral makes Euros history as his double dumps Austria out of tournament

Must read

Merih Demiral scored the quickest knockout goal in European Championship history with his double sending Turkey to the quarter-finals.

The centre-back sparked wild celebrations inside the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig when he broke the deadlock against Austria just one minute into the last 16 clash.

Demiral, who plies his trade in Saudi Arabia for Al Ahli, scored both of Turkey’s goals in their 2-1 victory over Austria.

His first came after just 57 seconds, where he reacted quickest after goalkeeper Patrick Pentz scrambled a corner off the line.

The ball fell to the 26-year-old’s feet, who smashed the ball into the roof of the net to give Turkey a dream start.

In doing so, he scored the quickest goal in the knockout stage of the Euros – beating Robert Lewandowski‘s eight-year record.

The Barcelona striker set the record at Euro 2016 after scoring for Poland against Portugal after one minute and 40 seconds.

Demiral’s strike is also the second quickest in European Championship history, with Albania’s Nedim Bajrami breaking the deadlock against Italy after just 23 second earlier this tournament.

Commenting on the goal, ex-Scotland international Chris Iwelumo said on talkSPORT commentary: “It’s so unlucky!

“It just comes off the [goalkeeper] and Demiral reacts quickest to it and smashes it into the roof of the net.

“There’s so many bodies in front of him and he just hits it, it’s an excellent finish.”

Prior to Euro 2024, there had been no goals scored at the Euros inside a minute.

In another incredible statistic, Turkey have now scored the quickest goals in the knockout stages at both major tournaments.

At the World Cup in 2002, Hakan Sukur opened the scoring after just 11 seconds against co-hosts South Korea in the third-place play-off – which Turkey won 3-2.

Demiral then doubled Turkey’s lead in the 59th minute, as he got on the end of Arda Guler’s inswinging corner to head home at the near post.

Michael Gregoritsch then halved the deficit from another corner, but they failed to get back on level terms despite their late onslaught.

Turkey will now face the Netherlands in Saturday’s quarter-final at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.
