Rangers hero Alfredo Morelos linked with stunning return to Europe

Must read

ALFREDO MORELOS could make a shock return to Europe for next season as interest continues to grow in the striker.

The former Rangers star, 28, has been linked with several moves away from his current club Santos since his free transfer last summer.

The Colombian quit Ibrox at the end of his contract last year along with Ryan Kent , Scott Arfield, Allan McGregor and Filip Helander.

Morelos hoped to reignite his career away from Glasgow, but it hasn’t worked out for him in Brazil, much like Kent‘s disastrously spell in Turkey.

And just like the former Liverpool winger, Morelos looks set to part ways with his current club before the summer ends.

The frontman has been heavily linked with a move back to his homeland as ambitious Colombian sides Atletico Junior and Atletico Nacional were recently battling it out for his signature.

Interest from elsewhere in South America has seemingly cooled in recent days since though as neither club have managed to thrash out a deal for the striker as of yet.

And now they could be pipped in the race for the 28-year-old as Greek giants Olympiacos have also been credited with interest.

Brazilian outlet Versus claim that Morelos has been made available for transfer by manager Fabio Carille, and the board are currently looking to negotiate a transfer fee with interested clubs.

They received an offer from a Mexican club but the contract offer was promptly rejected by the player.

And the report suggests Olympiacos have also made an official approach to Santos for the frontman in an attempt to bring him back to Europe next season.

The Greek giants will play in the Europa League this year after winning the Europa Conference League last term and manager Jose Luis Mendilibar is keen to add experience to his attack.

Morelos is fourth in the all-time top scorers list in the competition with 32 to his name – eight behind Celtic legend and charts leader Henrik Larsson – and he will be looking to add to his already impressive tally before he retires.

The striker has already made it clear that his next preferred destination would be Europe – and he could find himself playing his football in Piraeus beyond this summer.

Olympiacos have won 81 major trophies in their history – making them the most successful club in Greece.

Morelos won’t be the only player familiar with Scottish football in the team if he des end up at Olympiacos.

Former Scotland Under-21s star Jordan Holsgrove is also looking to make his mark in the squad after spending last season out on loan, following his move to Greece from Portugal in 2023.
