Report: Brave Emperor will not take Europe spot in Ky. Derby

Must read

Brave Emperor, whose 32 points put him at the top of the
Europe qualifying standings, will not be shipped to the U.S. for Kentucky Derby 2023, according to a report Wednesday.

“The costs of getting him to America would wipe out all his
earnings,” Tom Palin of owner Middleham Park Racing told Thoroughbred Daily News.

Palin said the only way Brave Emperor would end up in Kentucky
on May 6 was if the horse were to be sold to someone who would foot the bill to
make the trip.

Trained by Archie Watson, the gelding by Sioux Nation won a
points race March 15 at Kempton and then finished a close second to Bold Act on
Saturday in the Cardinal Stakes at Chelmsford City. The two one-mile races in
England were run on all-weather tracks.

Churchill Downs rules say no invitation will be extended
beyond the top four points earners on the Europe road to the Derby. Cairo was
next among Triple Crown nominees in the standings, but he appeared to be taken out of consideration after he was diverted to the main Derby trail and finished 10th last month in the UAE Derby (G2).
