Since being promoted to the role of vice-president of Amazon Fashion in 2020, Ruth Diaz has continued to lead the division’s European arm from her hometown of Madrid by growing the ecommerce giant’s clothing and footwear offering, and improving customer experience across its UK, German, French, Italian and Spanish markets. Amazon Fashion Europe stocks brands including Calvin Klein, Crocs, Vans and Levi’s.

The business kicked off 2023 by partnering with New York City-based online rental platform Rent the Runway, to sell pre-loved fashion products from 35 brands, including Jonathan Simkhai, Tory Burch and Rag & Bone, across workwear, casualwear, tops, coats, jumpers and denim.

By August, however, Amazon announced the scrapping of dozens of its in-house Private Label brands. First launched in the US in 2016 with seven labels, Amazon Private Label expanded to 30, including men’s suiting and accessories label Franklin Tailored, and casual womenswear line James & Erin. The closure was said to be part of Amazon’s cost-saving strategy.

In its latest full-year results for the 12 months to 31 December 2022, Amazon reported a 0.5% year-on-year rise in net product sales to $242.9bn (ÂŁ200bn). Operating income declined by 50% to $12bn (ÂŁ9.9bn).
