Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham are preparing to secure a stunning third successive promotion ahead of the new season, and the Deadpool star was watching some of the best in the game compete at Euro 2024
Ryan Reynolds was joined by fellow Hollywood star Hugh Jackman in the stands at the Euro 2024 quarter-final between the Netherlands and Turkey on Saturday.
Reynolds and Jackman team up in their upcoming blockbuster ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, but the pair took a break from promoting the film to see the match in Berlin. The Netherlands overcame an early Samet Akaydin goal to win 2-1 and advance to the semi-finals.
Ronald Koeman ’s side staged a quick turnaround to recover, with Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij heading in Memphis Depay ‘s cross before Cody Gakpo stabbed them in front six minutes later. The Liverpool forward’s contact was not the cleanest, but it mattered little as the ball deflected off of Mert Muldur before finding the back of the net.

Naturally, as the co-owner of Wrexham, Reynolds is interested in football. Back in November 2020, Reynolds and Rob McElhenney – famed for creating and starring in ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ – teamed up to purchase Wrexham for £2.25 million.
They used their platforms to shine a light on the club and area, largely through the popular Disney+ documentary titled ‘ Welcome to Wrexham ’. By attending the Euro 2024 game, perhaps Reynolds was simply doing some scouting ahead of the Welsh club kicking off their League One season.
After 15 years outside the football league, Wrexham followed up their National League title by securing back-to-back promotions and get out of League Two at the first time of asking. Ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, the Red Dragons were looking to complete a permanent deal with Arthur Okonkwo after the goalkeeper helped them secure back-to-back promotions.

Wrexham followed up the Okonkwo deal by signing defender Lewis Brunt from Leicester City on a permanent basis for an undisclosed fee. Wrexham is also being linked with a proven League One midfielder in George Dobson, and there is still plenty of time for more business to be completed with manager Phil Parkinson revealing the club is in talks with various clubs and people.
“We’re in talks with several clubs, several players,” Parkinson told BBC Wales. “We’ve targets that are really good players and I’m hopeful we can get a few more over the line. We’re not where we want to be yet. We’ve got work to be done but we know that. For every deal that gets over the line there’s others in the background we’re working on, and hopefully we’ll add more quality into the squad before the start of the season.
“It’s going be a competitive division like it was last year in League Two and this is going to be no different. We’ve got to make sure we’re ready and the squad’s not just got the quality but it’s got the depth as well. That’s our intention and we’re working extremely hard to achieve that.”
It seems Parkinson and Wrexham’s famous owners are under no illusions: League One will represent the most difficult challenge of their ownership tenure yet. After completing preseason, the Red Dragons kick off the 2024/25 season against Wycombe Wanderers at the Racecourse Ground on 10th August.
