Shaqiri plans to leave Chicago Fire in 2024 return to Europe could benefit both sides

Must read

In early 2022, Chicago Fire announced Xherdan Shaqiri as a new addition to their squad. Over the course of 75 games and 5,531 minutes on the field, the Swiss player did not significantly contribute to the Firemen, who signed him to a multi-year contract set to end in the winter of 2024.

Shaqiri is set to compete in Euro 2024 with Switzerland, which is in Group A of the competition, and has expressed a desire to return to European football: “It’s hard for me to say where I’ll be in two years. One thing is clear, my contract in Chicago expires in the winter and the tendency is for me to leave and return to Europe,” said the midfielder.

An interesting point about Shaqiri’s desire to leave Chicago Fire is that he sees a return to the old continent as a way to better support the Swiss national team, due to the higher pace of play. “I have to wait and see, but I remain calm and a return to Europe would also be important for the national team because of the speed of the game,” said the number 10.

We can’t deny that Europe still has strong leagues, with four major highlights: the Premier League, Bundesliga, LaLiga, and Serie A. The level of these leagues is superior to the MLS. However, the curiosity lies in the fact that Shaqiri did not perform well in the American league. So, the question is, how will he be able to play at a high level in Europe?

He hasn’t managed to charm. The MLS can be competitive and we have good names who are performing better and playing in good games for their national teams. Do you want a big name? We’ve got one. Lionel Messi, who is indispensable for Argentina, a world-class team. The midfielder’s possible departure is also an encouragement to the Chicago Fire, who are doing well without the player and haven’t lost in three games since he joined the Swiss team.

Offers will come in, and a departure would be beneficial for both sides. Firemen fans will likely feel relieved, as it will open up space for the team to sign someone who can genuinely contribute more effectively to Chicago Fire, bringing much more to the game.
