HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — As the busy summer travel season kicks off, travel site ‘Hopper’ says millions of Americans are choosing Europe as their getaway destination.
Europe is always a popular travel destination, but the lead economist at ‘Hopper,’ Hayley Berg, says there’s even more demand in the summer.
“We’re expecting about 57,000 flights to take off from US airports headed to European centers,” Berg said.
Berg says travel bookings to Europe surge this time of year because kids are off from school and for most of Europe, the weather is best during summer months.
“Good news for travelers to Europe. Prices are down about 16% compared to this time last year,” Berg explained.
If you’re looking to get a deal on a last-minute trip, Berg says you need to act fast and book now!
She suggests skipping the most popular and expensive destinations like London, Rome, and especially Paris, where the Olympics will be hosted later this month. She says you should instead be opting for cities that are more off the beaten path.
“I recommend Reykjavik, Copenhagen, and Stockholm. All three are still under 5 or $600 round trip from the US this summer,” Berg added. “Have a little bit more temperate weather during those hottest months and are definitely, definitely going to have fewer crowds.”
Berg went on to say that one of the best ways to save is to fly during the week.
“You’ll save about $400 per ticket if you can depart on Tuesday or Wednesday and return early in the week,” Berg shared. “Skip the Friday or Saturday departures, which will be the most expensive.”
If you’re flexible, consider shifting your vacation to the end of August or early Septemeber.
“We typically see prices are 30% lower if you travel at the end of summer or early fall,” Berg stated. “So for those flexible travelers, this is one way that you can save a tremendous amount and get more bang for your buck when you’re in the region.”
