Luis de la Fuente has insisted that Spain will be taking nothing for granted against England in the Euro 2024 final and branded Gareth Southgate’s side a “super team”
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has dismissed criticism of England ahead of Sunday’s Euro 2024 final in Berlin.
The Three Lions have a chance to win their first major international tournament in 58 years when they take on Spain following a dramatic last-gasp win over the Netherlands.
But despite their run to the final, Gareth Southgate ‘s side have taken plenty of criticism from fans and pundits for underwhelming performances and, in Spain, they now face the tournament’s outstanding team.
While Spain head into Sunday’s showpiece final as the red-hot favourites, De la Fuente talked England up after being asked if their approach would play into Spain’s hands.
Speaking to RTVE, via Marca, De la Fuente replied: “If it is to take away the merit of what has been achieved, I do not agree. England is a super team, a super team. From the beginning they were one of the candidates to be champions along with France, Portugal, Germany… we are two teams in a great moment.
“We are strong in that we understand very well what our strengths are and we continue trying to perfect them and improve.”
Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams have been two of Spain’s most influential players during their impressive run to the final.

England icon Wayne Rooney pinpointed them as Spain’s danger men during an interview with The Times, saying: “England will need to defend well on the flanks against Spain, because their brilliant two young wingers provide their main threat.
“Lamine Yamal will be full of confidence after his brilliant goal against France and he reminds me a bit of how I was at Euro 2004 – a teenager having the time of his life.
“Fear? Young lads like him, Nico Williams and Mainoo haven’t lived long enough to know it or understand what it is. On the big stage of a European Championship they’re just playing and enjoying it and having fun, and normally that’s the best way to play the game.
“Williams, for me, is exceptional. He reminds me of Cristiano Ronaldo when Cristiano was young. He’s a big lad, he’ll take the ball and sometimes tries too much but usually makes the right decisions.
“He is an incredible threat in one-on-one situations and scores goals as well. England need to be really careful with him.”
