Spain vs England LIVE as Liverpool BOXPARK packed out

Must read

Mikel Oyarzabal has given Spain a late lead in the Euro 2024 final.

Cole Palmer had equalised for England after Nico Williams had put Spain 1-0 ahead in the Euro 2024 final.

The Three Lions will contest their first ever major final on foreign soil as they bid to lift the Euros trophy for the first time ever this evening.

Gareth Southgate’s side secured their place in the Euros showpiece courtesy of Ollie Watkins’ late strike against the Netherlands on Wednesday, while Spain beat France the previous night.

Tens of thousands of England fans are expected to flock to Germany in the hope that the likes of Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka and Jude Bellingham can end 58 years of hurt.

But Spain will pose the toughest test England have faced so far, with Luis de la Fuente’s side undoubtedly having been the best team in the tournament.

The final kicks off at 8pm and you can keep up with all the build-up followed by live updates with the Liverpool Echo below:

Spanish celebrations

Spain players rush to Dani Olmo like he’s scored the winner after he nodded Guehi’s goalbound effort off the line.

No wonder, it was a heroic piece of defending to keep out what would have been another equaliser.

Four minutes added on

Four minutes left to play in Berlin. It might not be coming home, y’know.

Off the line!

Declan Rice is denied by Unai Simon from a corner and Marc Guehi’s header from the rebound is cleared off the line by Dani Olmo. What drama!

Yamal off

Lamine Yamal is going off for Mikel Merino for Spain. What a future the young Barcelona winger has ahead of him.

Time running out for England

Heart-breaking moment for England as Spain cut them open again with some slick passing as Mikel Oyarzabal exchanges passes with Cucurella.

Such a shame for Pickford after keeping them in this final. Time now looks like it’s running out for the Three Lions.

Toney on

Ivan Toney is on for Phil Foden. A big few minutes for the Brentford striker.

GOAL! Spain 2-1 England (Oyarzabal)

Spain take the lead with less than five minutes of normal time left on the clock. It’s the substitute Mikel Oyarzabal!

Pickford calls for calm after another great save

Which way is this one going to go?
Does either side have something in the locker to win this before we go into extra time?
Pickford calls for calm after denying Yamal again with another wonderful save.

Crazy scenes after Palmer scores

Crazy scenes here after Cole Palmer’s brilliant finish to put England level against Spain in Berlin.

But look at all those pints.. a shame to waste them!

Anyway, England right back in it now.

BOXPARK goes wild as England score

BOXPARK erupts as Cole Palmer equalises for England in the Euros final.

Ice cold finish

There was that moment of inspiration off the bench while Cole Palmer this time the hero.

Nicely-worked move from England and all of a sudden they’re level.

Another inspired move off the bench from Gareth Southgate to be fair.

GOAL! Spain 1-1 England (Palmer)

Well we said Palmer had been good in his cameos and that was special from the Chelsea man eho side foots one into the bottom corner from about 20 yards. Laid off by Bellingham. Great stuff from the ex-Manchester City youngster. England right back in it.

Mainoo off, Palmer on

There’s one of those substitutes I was talking about. Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo makes way for Chelsea’s Cole Palmer. He’s been excellent in his relatively short cameos this Euros, Palmer.

Pickford save

A huge moment in this game as Jordan Pickford keeps out Lamal’s low effort. That might have been curtains for England had that crept into the corner. Meanwhile Alvaro Morata has made way for Mikel Oyarzabal. That’s Spain’s No.9 and captain going off after 68 minutes. Southgate has some real quality on his own bench to try and alter this one. Trent Alexander-Arnold, anyone?

Pickford keeps England in the game

That would have been game over if Spain wonderkid Yamal had tucked their latest chance away.

Jordan Pickford came to the rescue for England with a strong right arm to turn his low effort around the post.

Something to shout about

Whereas England have made that change up front, replacing their captain and all-time leading scorer Harry Kane – who Paul observed has been off it for most of the tournament – with Ollie Watkins, their last minute hero against the Dutch, it’s their two attacking midfielders who combine to almost fashion an equaliser.

Phil Foden picks out Jude Bellingham for a shot and his long-range effort fizzes just wide. Not quite good enough but at least it gives the England hordes something to shout about.

Kane off

Harry Kane’s tournament is over. He is replaced by Ollie Watkins. Some different for Spain to think about now. He’s not the sharpshooter Kane is, but the Bayern Munich man has been way off it all Euros for my money. Doesn’t look fit. Let’s see what Aston Villa’s Watkins can do.

Spain growing in belief

Spain are just starting to make England look a bit panicky now as we approach the hour mark. The Three Lions haven’t responded well to the goal and it is La Roja who are pressing for a second. The midfield is a mismatch currently and Williams looks so dangerous every time he gets on the ball.

Weather the storm

Falling behind has really knocked England. Having frustrated Spain during the first half, conceding so soon after the restart was the worst possible time.

Could easily be 3-0 Spain now. They have to weather this storm and get a grip of the game again.

Looks like Watkins is going to come on. His pace in attack could be vital.

England on the ropes

England are well and truly on the back foot now.

Giving the ball away regularly, they’re under the cosh.

Morata slips a shot past Pickford but thankfully John Stones clears the goal-bound effort.

Something has to change here or Baddiel and Skinner’s original “30 years of hurt” will be doubling to 60.

BOXPARK stunned to silence as Spain take the lead

This video shows the moment BOXPARK was stunned to silence as Spain took the lead in the Euros final.

If only..

If only England had the big man Emile Heskey tonight.

He won far more trophies than Kane, that’s for sure.

Scenes in BOXPARK with England behind

That’s not what (the majority) of the crowd in BOXPARK wanted.

Nico Williams and Spain finally showed the quality we know they are capable of.

Poor from Walker

I was about to put in how crucial could that injury to Rodri prove to be, given his ridiculously long and quite frankly obscene unbeaten run. He’s obviously a big loss whenever absent for club and country.

But then Spain come out and score straight from kick-off pretty much. A really well-worked goal, finished by Williams, but poor defending from Walker in particular. He’s caught out of position and leaves the forward unmarked.

Then does the same moments later as Olmo scuffs an effort wide.

England have done well coming from behind throughout this tournament, and they’ll need to do so again.

Goal! Spain 1-0 England (Williams)

He’s been one of the players of the tournament and Nico Williams puts Spain ahead against England just minutes into the second half.

He collects Yamal’s pass and hammers past Jordan Pickford, who has no chance.

England carved open

You could see that happening a good second or so before it arrived.

England were cut open by Spain and Williams made no mistake.

The pass from young Yamal carved them wide open and Pickford had no chance.

If Gareth Southgate’s men are to triumph tonight then they’re going to have to come from behind yet again.

GOAL! Spain 1-0 England (Williams)

That is quite the finish from Nico Williams and it’s the two wingers who we pinpointed as the threat that have done the damage. Lamine Yamal floats inside of Luke Shaw and plays in Williams and Kyle Walker is nowhere near the Athletic Club man, who dispatches it with aplomb with his left foot. Spain 1-0 England. Some start to this second half. What have England got in response now?

Sealed with a kiss

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was shown chatting to Declan Rice in the tunnel before the teams re-emerged for the second half.

As he makes his way on to the turf, the Everton player waves to loved ones in the crowd and blows a kiss.

Meanwhile, Spain have lost Manchester City man Rodri to injury.

Concert Square scenes at half-time

Here’s Concert Square right now as England remain level with Spain at half-time.

Out come Spain.. with Rodri not been spotted among the players. A worry for the Spanish..

Reaction from BOXPARK

This video taken at BOXPARK shows the reaction to Phil Foden’s half chance at the end of a cagey opening 45 minutes of the Euros final.

Jamie Carragher’s analysis

The thoughts of former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher on that first half.

It’s all Spain indeed but they’ve not exposed England too much in the first half.

A hero needed

That half went the way England probably wanted, you have to say. They’ve brought Spain down to their level and are frustrating the side that have been the team of the tournament.

Shaw has done really well to keep Yamal quiet, justifying his surprise selection. Bellingham has had a bright enough half too, getting more involved from the left, cutting inside, as the game went on, while Saka’s pace is always a threat.

Stones and Guehi also look very solid at centre-back, keeping Morata quiet.

Southgate has used his bench well so far in the tournament, and will need to again. It’s going to take a moment of magic to decide this one on the evidence of that first half. But who could be the hero tonight?

Clodagh from Ireland is supporting Spain tonight

Clodagh, orginally from Ireland but living in Dingle, has turned out at BOXPARK wearing a Spanish top tonight. Clodagh said she wasn’t nervous to show her support for Spain, despite being surrounded by England fans.

Clodagh said: “I’m Irish so we have to go for Spain, 100%. I think it’s going to be 3-1 Spain.

“There’s a complicated history between Ireland and England, and I love Spain. I love all the Spanish football teams.”

First shot just before half-time

Well it’s stalemate at the interval and we had to wait until stoppage time for either side to have a shot on target.

Although Spain had the edge for most of the first 45 minutes, it’s England’s Phil Foden who does well to make contact at the back post and test Unai Simon.

SHOT ALERT

We’ve had a shot on goal! It’s Phil Foden, it’s on target and it’s held by Xavi Simons.

And that just about sums it all up, this half. Which has been a bit of a non-event.

Anyway, half time in a mo so time to get a few more beers in and see if the second half is more interesting.

Chance for Foden

Hard chance for Foden, that. Rice’s free-kick looks to be going out for an England corner, but he pops up to volley at the far post. The Man City man is stretching though, and shoots straight at Simon.

Kane struggling

Famous last words and all that but England would look so much more threatening with Ollie Watkins leading the line and running in behind than Harry Kane, whose static movement is meat and drink for Spain’s defence. Kane might be aiming for Golden Boot tonight but he’s had an ordinary tournament for me. Just can’t get into the game. The service hasn’t been there in fairness but Watkins’s pace and harrying would give Spain something else to think about.

Rolling Stones

I’ve started to refer to Everton’s silky centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite as “The Carlisle Kaiser” but another ball-playing Blues defender John Stones almost brought this final into life by a surging run upfield.

The Manchester City player, who has also done well in his defensive duties, showed he’s something of ‘The Barnsley Beckenbauer’ as we move towards the interval.

Latest from BOXPARK as fans share predictions

Our reporter Ryan Paton has been chatting to fans at BOXPARK Liverpool tonight.

Max, from Birmingham, is predicting an England win on penalties and doesn’t think he’ll be able to remember much of the celebrations if Gareth Southgate’s side lift the trophy

Shaw thing

Over 35 minutes played and Luke Shaw has had an excellent half so far against Lamine Yamal. The Manchester United defender hasn’t played much football this calendar and this is his first start of the Euros this evening but he has shackled the Barca starlet expertly. So far. Still no real chances for either side, however.

Getting tetchy

While it’s been a tight start to the final as previously mentioned, the French referee seems to be struggling to deal with proceedings and there’s an increasing feeling that this is all getting a bit tetchy.

There’s been plenty of dark arts from Spain but it’s Harry Kane who is first in the book and tempers are simmering and threatening to boil over.

Meanwhile, Pickford is already doing plenty of shouting as England are forced to defend a couple of corners in quick succession.

Scrappy Spain

It’s all gone a bit scrappy right now.

Harry Kane and Dani Olmo have both been booked for poor challenges and neither side putting much passing together right now.

It’s not a classic, but it that way.

Pickford claims a cross

Almost 19 minutes on the clock and it’s a first take for Pickford.

The Everton and England goalkeeper earlier had to deal with an overhit back pass from John Stones but remained calm and it’s a similar situation here as Spain right-back Carvajal curls in a cross towards centre-forward Morata only for Pickford to claim the ball confidently.

It’s all been pretty cagey so far but the Spaniards have looked more threatening.

Outnumbered

Spain fans really are outnumbered here as England’s support bursts into a rendition of Three Lions.

Saka the dangerman

Saka’s been England’s main threat so far. His pace will cause Cucurella problems. Need to get the Arsenal man on the ball as much as possible.

England feeling their way in

After Spanin dominated the ball for the first 10 minutes or so, England are just starting to feel their way into this. Walker has just got on the outside overlap but delivered a poor ball in and Saka and Foden are starting to see a bit more of it too. Gareth Southgate will be pleased with how his team have settled really as we approach the 20-minute mark.

England on the back foot

It’s been a slow start for England in terms of the Spanish dominating possession during the first 15 minutes but so far goalkeeper Jordan Pickford hasn’t had to use his hands.

Gareth Southgate’s side have been forced into some last-ditch defending but so far the Everton man’s only interventions have been kicking the ball upfield towards Harry Kane from kick-off and then picking out Saka with another long delivery.

It will be interesting to see how Kyle Walker fares though after going down early.

Quiet start.. for some

A pretty lowkey opening 10 minutes of this game. Spain with all the possession, England soaking it up.

John Stones with a pretty heroic block there.

Meanwhile, in Benidorm..
