Tennis Europe at Wrexham: A Round Up

The Tennis Europe Junior Tour arrived in Wrexham from 1-8 April, as top talent from around Europe converged on Wrexham Tennis Centre.

Hollie Smart was crowned girls’ under-14s singles champion , while Leo Wright took the boys’ title.

The girls under-14s doubles was taken by Hollie with partner Edie Griffiths, while Leo, like Hollie, claimed a second title when he and partner Rhys Lawlar won the boys’ doubles.

In the under-12s competition the girls’ singles winner was Ingrid Dumitru, and Frederic Fabricus won the boys competition.

In the girls’ doubles Ingrid was again successful, along with partner Sophia Krutikova, and Sam De Lange and James Meachen were the boys’ winners.

Hollie won 6-0, 6-0 against Ophelia Korpanec Davis in her match, Reflecting on her title she said: “It feels really good because last year I lost in the semi-finals.”

Leo won through 6-3, 6-4 in his contest against Pavana Nrshinga. He was delighted with his win and also commented how well Pavana played.

Leo and Rhys beat Pim de Graaff and Stan Put 6-4 7-6. They commented how their opponents got a good start in both sets, but they worked together to secure the victory.

Hollie and Edie were 6-2, 61 winners against Daniella Britton and Sevil Parviz. After the match Hollie said: ‘There were a lot of sudden-death deuces but I think at the end of the first set we were on a roll and that carried on.’

Ingrid secured her title with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-3 victory over Yanzyle Zhang. After her win she said she always had tough matches against Yannzyle.

Frederic’s match against Kamran Arif was a thriller, Frederic winning through 12-10 in a tie-break. He said: “It was a great match and a great fight and I really enjoyed it.” About opponent Kamran he added: “He played so well.”

Ingrid and Sophia won in straight sets but were pushed hard by Grace Watson and Isabel McLain as it finished 7-6, 7-5. Commenting on the contest they said it was a lot of ups and downs but they managed to get through it.

Sam and James beat Nicholas Ellinghorst and Adam Zikara 6-3, 6-1. They said it was an amazing feeling to win, adding they had, had a lot of difficult encounters on their way to the title.
