De Leeuw is a treasure – the last remaining Jewish deli in the quarter where the Frank family lived (south of the centre, not where they hid out above Otto Frank’s office on the Prinsengracht). Pickles are the speciality: crunchy sweet cucumbers and tangy gherkins, punch little yellow onions, and tangles of chillied onion rings, in barrels (as they have been since 1850) and lined up in glass jars alongside mustards, piccalilli, horseradish, and more, all homemade by Bianca and her cheery colleagues. Silvery herring and anchovies gleam in their brine. Try a bolus, a doggie-doo-shaped (hence the name) traditional Amsterdam Yiddish pastry, sometimes with ginger.
