If you’re looking for the perfect getaway with your dog this summer, then the city of love could be exactly the right place to jet off to.

Paris has been named the most pet-friendly city in Europe, topping the list due to its plethora of hotels, restaurants and parks that all cater to canine companions.

New research from Ubuy UK has analysed the number of pet-friendly places across Europe and compiled them into a top ten for animal lovers, with scores out of 200 for each city. Paris scored an impressive 188 out of 200, with a whopping 550 hotels that allow pets, 688 dog-friendly restaurants and more than a thousand pet sitters.

Tied for second place are Madrid and Rome, with 177 points. Rome has the highest number of pet-friendly hotels with 1,210 options to choose from – however it has fewer pet sitters than Paris with 295 registered ones. Despite this, there are a lot of dog-friendly restaurants to choose from, so your dog likely won’t need a sitter, as they will be welcome in 904 places to eat.

Madrid has the highest number of pet sitters in Europe at 2,421 and the third highest number of parks at 102. Pet owners can also find 496 dog welcoming restaurants and 150 hotels that let pets stay, too.

Coming in third on the list is London with a score of 169 out of 200 – the British capital lost points because although it has the highest number of parks, it falls down slightly on dog-friendly hotels with 207 opening the doors to animals.

In fourth position was Berlin, scoring 166 points. It boasts 414 hotels that let pets in, as well as almost 400 restaurants that welcome dogs. There’s close to a thousand pet sitters in case you fancy a night on the town without your beloved pet tagging along.

Coming in fifth was Vienna in Austria with 157 points – this hotspot has 272 pet-friendly hotels, 294 restaurants and almost 500 registered pet sitters.

Faizan Khan, spokesperson for Ubuy, said the data shows Europe has plenty to offer dog parents. They said: “There isn’t any need to compromise on creating memories with your furry family members.

“If strolling through a park together sounds ideal, or trying out some local cuisine in the company of your cat or canine sounds even better, there is something for everyone – and every pet – in Europe’s capital cities.”

When travelling to any European Union country or Northern Ireland, your dog (or any other pet) must have a microchip, a rabies vaccine and a pet passport that’s accepted in whatever country you’re going to. For Finland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Norway and Malta, all dogs must have a tapeworm treatment.

If you decide to go via plane then it’s important to research the airline beforehand to see if your dog can travel in the cabin with you, or if they will need to go into the hold for the flight – and wherever they are, make sure they get a good run around before the plane.
