The first round of Euro 2024 group stage games will draw to a close on Tuesday evening, with Portugal vs Czech Republic one of two matches taking place in Germany
A few short days after Euro 2024 kicked off with Germany’s victory over Scotland, the first round of group games is almost over.
By around 10pm on Tuesday, all 24 teams in the competition will have played their first match. While some teams will be happy with their opening performance, some have work to do.
England will be among the happier teams after their 1-0 victory over Serbia, even if there’s still some room for improvement. As for Scotland, improvement will need to be immediate after their 5-1 hammering at the hands of the hosts.
Group F is in focus on Tuesday, and both England and Scotland will have an eye on proceedings as they size up potential round of 16 opponents. It’s the first chance to see one of the favourites for the tournament, Portugal, among others.
Portugal had an underwhelming campaign in 2020 after coming into the competition as reigning champions. They won their opening group game against Hungary but didn’t claim another victory, falling at the hands of Belgium in the round of 16.
Roberto Martinez was Belgium manager that day but is now in the Portugal dugout. He’ll need to decide whether to start Cristiano Ronaldo – one of two players, along with Czech frontman Patrik Schick, to lead the scoring charts at the last Euros.
