What are the rules on cards at Euro 2024?

At Euro 2024, a player will be suspended for their team’s next match if they receive two yellow cards in two different games.

This saw Phil Foden sit out England’s 1-0 win over the Czech Republic in Euro 2020, having started and been booked in each of the first two games against Croatia and Scotland.

In addition, a player will also be banned if they accumulate four yellow cards in total.

UEFA are cracking down on dissent in this tournament, meaning only the captains will be able to speak to the referee during games.

Therefore, yellow cards could be handed out regularly, with referees told to caution players who step out of line straight away.

Yellow card tallies are wiped after the quarter-finals end, so players enter the final four with a clean slate.

However, a red card received at any stage of the tournament results in an automatic one-match suspension.

Depending on the nature of the red card, additional sanctions can be added on by UEFA if deemed necessary. 

Any suspension received in the team’s final game of the competition will be carried over into their next official match.
