Spain’s clash with Croatia at the Olympiastadion in Berlin headlines a feast of action on Saturday which is the first day of Euro 2024 where fans can enjoy three games
Euro 2024 is officially underway! And Saturday brings us our first triple-header.
Some greats of the European game will make their bow in Germany today, all dreaming of lifting the famous Henri Delaunay Cup in less than a month’s time. For seven out of the next eight days, we’ll be treated to matches which kick-off at 2pm, 5pm and 8pm in the UK.
After Friday’s opener between hosts Germany and Scotland in Munich, Saturday sees a feast of football on offer. Firstly, the two other teams in Group A, Hungary and Switzerland, face off will in Cologne.
Then one of the group stage’s most anticipated matchups, Spain against Croatia, takes place at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, where this summer’s European Championship final will take place on Sunday, July 14. To round off the day and the action in Group B – dubbed the group of death – reigning champions Italy face Albania in Dortmund.
Spain and Italy will both fancy their chances of winning Euro 2024, each having won one of the last three Euro tournaments. Spain even went back-to-back in 2008 and 2012 during their golden era in which they also won the World Cup.
Italy beat England on penalties in the dramatic final of Euro 2020, a win which marked the Azzurri’s second European Championship triumph after claiming victory in 1968 before the tournament’s expansion 12 years later. A total of 24 teams now compete in the tournament, with the top two from each of the six groups advancing to the knockout phase alongside the four best third-placed teams.
All of the action throughout Euro 2024 will be available live on UK free-to-air TV, as the BBC and ITV share the broadcasting rights for the tournament – and Saturday promises to be one of the most intriguing days.
